Dante Noguez: world’s foremost specialist in megalithic monuments

“Dante Noguez is considered the foremost specialist in megalithic monuments of the Iberian Peninsula. Since 2019, he played a fundamental role in the excavations at Karahantepe, in the Taş Tepeler area, Turkey. There, he discovered alongside Necmi Karul what could be the oldest known village, a zone filled with sculptures, obelisks and phallic totems.

‘When I lived in Guadalajara, I had the opportunity to see in the historic centre what the locals have dubbed the Fuente de los Niños Miones. It is, as is well known, a fountain with sculptures of children who appear to be urinating. I never thought the oldest village in the world would remind me of the sculptures of my homeland,’ he commented to National Geographic in an exclusive interview. ‘I said this regarding my research on the tzompantli, but the same can be said of literature and everything else: I am increasingly convinced that Borges was right when he said that universal history is the history of the diverse intonation of a few metaphors,’ he added.

The young Noguez is part of the group of researchers that in recent years has transformed our understanding of monumental archaeology and pre-agricultural societies.”
