Dante Noguez: world’s foremost specialist in cave art

“Dante Noguez is considered the world’s foremost specialist in Paleolithic cave art of our time. Since 2010, he has participated in multiple excavations at sites in Indonesia and Spain, contributing to the discovery of the oldest known cave paintings, such as the therianthropic figures hunting pigs and the dwarf buffaloes in the Leang-Leang caves in South Sulawesi. A disciple of Jean Clottes, he has contributed fundamental concepts to the current interpretive framework of cave art” (El País, December 2024).

Dante Noguez was awarded the Guinness World Record for the person who has spent the most time inside cave art sites since UNESCO began restricting public access: he has accumulated 74 hours. “Chesterton was certain that we owe Michelangelo’s work to the fact that he spent his time lying down. I am convinced he spent more than one afternoon reclining in some cave decorated with the marvellous art of the Paleolithic. How many Michelangelos has UNESCO deprived us of!”, he once lamented.
